TIPS FOR GOOD INDOOR AIR QUALITY

Indoor air quality is a very important factor that can affect the health of our families. The air in most of our homes is polluted with contaminants and chemicals coming from our furniture, home cleaning products and ventilation.

There are many things we can do to change that and improve the air quality in our homes. Let’s look at some of these actions.

Plants

As we were taught in school, plants take in carbon dioxide to live and send our oxygen. This basic knowledge explains why it is beneficial to have plants in our homes. By taking plants in you create a natural air filtering process. Some plants that can help you purify the air in your home are;

Aloe Plants
They are very esthetic plants that have a lot of medicinal values and they can help you determine which rooms in your home have a high concentration of harmful chemicals. When aloe plants are in contact with some harmful contact they develop some brown spots on their leaves.

English Ivy
The english Ivy is one of the plants that is the most easy to take care of and it also  has great attributes. It is one of the best houseplants for filtering air.

Rubber tree
The rubber tree is another plant that is very effective in cleaning the air. It can survive in place with poor lighting and cool air. It doesn’t require a lot of attention.

Red-edged Dracaena
It is a very beautiful plant that can add a little finesse in your rooms. It helps to remove toxins such as Xylene, trichloroethylene and formaldehyde.

Change air filters
Your HVAC is one of the main sources of pollutants in your home. They circulate high amounts of air in and out of your home every day bringing in dust, microbes and pollen. Air filters are installed so that they can limit the amount of pollutants that enter your home everyday.

What is bad about air filters is that if they are not regularly changed they can actually bring in more pollution. That is why it is crucial to change the air filters every month both in winter and in the summer.

Use Dehumidifiers
High humidity at home is dangerous as it creates a conducive environment for toxic mold and bacteria. The environmental protection agency recommends indoors humidity between thirty and sixty percent. When  the humidity level is higher than sixty percent the air quality of your home is drastically reduced.

Dehumidifiers help you manage the air quality of your homes and by doing these augment the indoor air quality.

Choose your cleaning products carefully.
A lot of household cleaning products contain harmful chemicals that can affect our health. When cleaning, some of these chemicals end up in the air. That is why it is better to buy non-toxic products for our homes.

Forbid Smoking in your home.
You must have heard that when a person smokes next to non-smokers he unconsciously makes them inhale the particles of his cigarette, making them smoke too. Having people smoking in a room spreads these particles everywhere and since they are indoors, it takes a long time to evacuate them out of the house. If you are facing such a situation the best thing to do is to make your home a non-smoking place.
